Go green, save money

Tuesday, November 11, 2008

An amendment to the Florida state constitution that would exempt those improving their property with storm-proofing or renewable energy devices from higher property taxes based on the resulting enhanced value of the home looks like it will be passed...

The vote on the amendment - which the electorate were able to deliver their verdicts on while participating in the presidential election this week - has initially been recorded as giving 60.4 per cent of the vote in favour of the move.

In order to become law 60 per cent support is required.

However, because of the close margin election rules state that there must be a recount, which means the outcome has not yet been confirmed.

If the law is passed, it will mean those investing in property in the state will be able to add these features to it without having to pay a higher property tax as a result.

The state, which famously saw a contentious recount in the 2000 presidential election, was won by Mr Obama in this week's poll.
